about

The general background:

Back in 2014 a friend of mine mentioned that he was starting work on a video game, specifically a dungeon crawler. I excitedly told him that if he was interested, I could provide him with some music for it and set out to make a demo reel in order to showcase what sort of sounds I could offer.

Unfortunately the project was eventually abandoned and the music sat on my hard drive in a perpetual state of being forgotten and re-discovered. Finally this year I decided that I wanted to polish up and release a selection of tracks from it which I felt held up the best.

I was primarily trying to recreate the sound and feel of games such as Diablo, whilst also being heavily influenced by Legend of Grimrock which I was playing at the time. Influence also seeped in from the music I was listening to from the more experimental end of grime & club music.

I felt strongly that this type of soundtrack is just as much about the collage of ambient and environmental sounds it rests on top of, so despite this layer of sound often being treated as something separate from the soundtrack, I felt that I was only painting half the picture if I did not incorporate an atmospheric soundscape as part of the music. I also thought that perhaps I could take this a step further by treating these sounds as musical elements instead of simply creating a loop of ambience to write on top of.

About the individual tracks:

The first track was my idea of what could score an introductory cutscene. Being given nothing in the way of story I decided to invent a narrative of my own.
The track moves through three distinct movements:
In the first your character is on a windy and rainy hillside, being led towards an entrance, past a procession of druids conducting a ritual.
In the second you are clutching onto a torch as you descend through a narrow and dark stone passageway.
In the third this opens out into a cavernous underground stone structure, or dungeon.

The second track was my idea of a save point or central hub. You have emerged from the other side of the underground structure you found yourself in at the end of track one and found yourself by a campfire in a clearing of a dark forest.
The combination of the soothing yet eerie music and environmental sounds assure you that you are currently safe but that danger awaits as soon as you move on.

The third and fourth tracks were intended for stretches of exploration in between encounters. Back inside another stone structure you investigate your surroundings but know that its inhabitants are looking for you.

In the fifth track you have stumbled upon some kind of shrine, once a place of sanctuary, now desecrated.

The final track is something of a bonus track and was one I wrote in case the person I was writing for decided to go in a more retro direction.

Tracks 2-6 are intended to work looped.
